Recently I went to the movies twice. Now I know that that is unusual as I normally only go once but in the last two weeks I had the opportunity to see a couple of quality films that might be worth watching. In the coming weeks and months I do intend on seeing more films now that the financial situation has improved and I will attempt to be less lax on writing about my experience and view of those films.
Watch for reviews of Tron: Legacy and the new Narnia movie as well as a few others that have caught my eye. I do apologize that I don't see many films early enough to make these reviews relevant to people that would like to see movies opening weekend. but I am limited by when I can go see them and available time to see them.
Anywho on with the reviews.
The Trailers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Pt 1.
Cowboys and Aliens
Another comic book turned into a feature film, but this one looks awesome. What more could you ask for Aliens, Cowboys, Harrison Ford, yes I said Harrison Ford. Of course we can't forget Daniel Craig either. The fact that its an alien invasion set in the wild west is just to cool to pass up. I'll probably be seeing this one in the theaters. Opening July 29th, 2011.
Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Narnia, sweet Narnia, we do so love you. As a fan of all the books I am so glad that they finally decided that they will continue on. Each movie seems to be better than the last. This one looks to be a family favorite of the season. I will of course be there to see it. Released on December 10th, 2010.
Kung Fu Panda 2
Okay, deep breaths. I know, I know its Jack Black's pandariffic animated return. I loved the first one but I am not sure about this one I have only seen the teaser and will have to wait to see if the actual trailer will show more of what we want to see. Sequels, especially animated ones, tend to not be as good as the original. There are a few exceptions to that rule but I am not holding my breath that this is one of them. Might be fun for the kids but I'm pretty sure the adults will not be entertained. Opening May 27th 2011.
Green Lantern
Another comic book movie this must be the year of the comic. If you had asked me a couple of years ago if I liked the Green Lantern I would have said not really. Now that I have been exposed to a number of my friends that are rabid fans its starting to grow on me. This movie has all the makings of a great comic book film with Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong as Sinestro and the cutting edge CGI looks amazing. The one thing that could ruin the whole thing is a bad script and if they don't do his signature constructs of light. We shall see because I will probably be there to see it as it opens on June 17th, 2011.
Green Hornet
I am all for a classic retelling of this famous hero but even I am a little leery of this movie. Seth Rogen, while a terrific actor and funny man, is an odd choice it fits right in with the current state of Hollyweird and the butchering of classic film and comics. It looks to be like a fun romp through the world of Green Hornet but it might be just a 90 minute running gag. Its scheduled for a January 14th, 2011 release and might be worth a trip if there is nothing better showing that week. Either way I will probably try and see it at some point.
Yogi Bear
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this movie. It may be one of the most poorly remade animated relaunches I have ever seen. If you have children then you may have to go see this one but I think it will probably be better on DVD and less costly as well. It opens on December 17th, 2010.
Red Riding Hood
Werewolves and Romance. As a retelling of the classic fairy tale this has a lot to be desired. It seems to have the Twilight treatment all over it but that may be just my cynical nature. I like werewolves as a classic horror monster and this treats them in that respect but I'm not sure where the fairy tale fits into this one. I may go see it if there is nothing better playing that week. It opens on March, 11, 2011.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1.
As a fan of the Harry Potter franchise I was a little skeptical when I heard that they were diving the final book into two films. After having watched this one though I am kind of amazed that they hadn't thought of it sooner. The last three films should have been longer or in two parts as the books had way more information than what was finally on screen. All told though this movie was more than expected it had action, drama and a fair amount of mystery that if one never read the books they could follow along and not be lost. A good film for families with older children as some parts were a little more violent than what parents of younger audiences may want to them exposed to. This is definitely one to see on the big screen and to own on DVD. It also has the added plus of not being shoved into that 3D mold. If that's your cup of tea than this ones for you.

The Trailers for Red
I arrived a little late to the theater so forgive me if this list is a little short.
Green Hornet

The Fighter
A top notch film that has no connection comics, novels or other media. As a moviegoer this is probably see if there was no other films playing that I already planned for but if you like sports like boxing and root for the underdog than by all means see this one. Its not a family friendly movie by any stretch but it looks to be enjoyable. This one will probably win awards. Opening December 17th, 2010.
Drive Angry
Nicholas Cage as an angry soul that escaped hell to come back and exact his revenge. Really what more needs be said its going to be a 90 minute violent action fueled thrill ride that will probably die so fast that people won't even realize it was ever in the theater. Of course that means I will go see it. It opens February 25th, 2011.
Red
Now when the trailers first started for this film I was kind of intrigued but having known nothing about the source material that made it even better. The fact that the movie is based on a comic book is not lost on me most movies these days are based on another medium like TV shows or novels, so a comic book is not much of a stretch. From what I understand the comic is much darker and more violent. As a movie it appeals to action fans everywhere it has all the earmarks of a great action film without all the pretentious plot points that drives most action films or lack of plot is some cases. Not recommended for younger viewers (it is rated R after all). It is worth a watch on the big screen I have to admit and this one also does not suffer from the lack of a 3D treatment as it didn't need it. Truly one to own on DVD.

Previews of Predators, Pregnancies and Lotteries
After a long hiatus I am back. My how the time flies and the movies just keep coming. This week we see a selection of movies that are as different as any movie could be from another.
So if you have been paying attention (more than me that is) then you already know where things are headed as the kids head back to school. Here are this weeks movies that you have to choose to spend your hard earned money on.
Piranha 3D
Really does this need to happen? A cheesy 50's style horror movie and in 3D? I don't know about you but this is not even gonna rate a "if its on TV I might watch it" or "I'll wait for the DVD". I think 'll pass. Thanks.
Nanny McPhee Returns
I'm sure that if you read my previous posts about this movie you know how I feel about it. If not you can find them here.
The Switch
Okay if I was into random chick flicks this might be for me but even the chicks I know are saying stay away. Romantic comedies are fun and usually worth a look but this one is kinda out there. I don't know what it is with Hollyweird of late and their penchant for pregnancy movies but its kinda weird and annoying at the same time. This one might be worth a DVD watch but I'm not gonna see it on the big screen.
Vampires Suck
Okay before I get started on this one I gotta tell you that I am all burned out on vampires. Movies, Books, whatever they have been overplayed in recent years. That being said I am totally going to watch this movie. I don't care that its a spoof of the more popular films it looks laugh out loud funny. I do have to admit that I liked the Scary Movies and this is in the same vein. If your as tired of Twilight and Vampires in general then this ones for you.
Lottery Ticket
I will admit that I have watched a few of these types of movies that target the African/American community (forgive me for being politically correct but I don't want to offend anyone). As much as I enjoyed watching them I did so when they were on TV or DVD. This one will be no different I think. If you are someone that enjoys comedies about people that live in the projects with a certain skin color than this one might be for you.
Well that's all the movies that are going to be released this week I hope that my random thoughts help you out with your movie selections.

Mega-Movie Madness
This week I had the opportunity to see 4 new movies. Needless to say I was thrilled when I was invited to go and see what Hollyweird had graced us with. Of course two fo the films I had seen previously (albeit I only critiqued one of them before this) but it was kind of nice to see them again at least to get a new perspective on whether or not I was too harsh or soft after having seen them previously. I have to say I was dead on the first time.
The Trailers
Each film brought new and interesting insight into what will be competing for our entertainment dollars and as usual it runs the gamut of possibilities. I present them and my views in the order that they were seen in the theater and with the title of the film they were associated with. The film reviews will follow the preview reviews.
The Last Airbender Previews
Green Hornet
I am all for a classic retelling of this famous hero but even I am a little leery of this movie. Seth Rogen, while a terrific actor and funny man, is an odd choice it fits right in with the current state of Hollyweird and the butchering of classic film and comics. Gullivers Travels
Jack Black as Gulliver. Need I say more. Like him or hate him he is a constant in our cinematic lives. Hollyweird seems to like putting him in family orientated films which he either shines in them or flops horribly. Regardless of what I or anyone else might think this film is probably not going to do well. I prefer the more staid versions (even the one with Ted Danson is probably going to be preferred to this one and that was a made for TV movie) but there is something to be said about Jack Black and his wacky behavior, it does draw crowds as no one seems to know what he is going to do next. Opening on December 22nd this is probably one Christmas present I might not want to open.
Rango
Do you like Chameleons? Do you like the voice of Johnny Depp? DO you like weird and bizarre films? This one might be for you. When I first saw this trailer I was wondering what the heck was going on and trying to figure out what the film aspired to be about. Honestly I am still wondering. I like Johnny Depp and this film has potential to be interesting, I just don't know if it will be worth the price of admission and I might wait for the DVD. This film releases March 4, 2011.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
This film is probably the most likely movie to watch in the coming months. Apparently it is based on a bestselling childrens book (since I do not have children I have know way of knowing if it will be accurate or not) it does look to be one of the best family movies that are releasing in the current schedule. Set for September 24, 2010 this film will probably be highly anticipated by families as well as adults. I am most likely going to see it just for the cutting edge digital effects and solid plot.
Nanny McPhee Returns
As you probably know family movies are usually not my cup of tea and this one is no different. As I previously stated here this film might be enjoyed by the whole family if you have children otherwise it will probably not interest you. It releases August 20, 2010 .
Megamind
When I first saw this trailer I had no idea what the movie was really about and I won't spoil it for you but here's a hint, its an animated film with Tina Fey, Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell. Ferrell plays the supervillain Megamind and he constantly tries to outwit and defeat his arch-nemesis Metro Man (Pitt) and then the wackiness ensues. Judging solely on the most recent trailer I am definitely going to see this one on November 5th, 2010 and probably laugh so hard it hurts.
Salt
The Town
Ah the love story between a thief and those that try to bring him down and put him behind bars. Yeah your probably going to guess what I am going to say next but I think I will pass on this one. It releases September 10, 2010 and I don't even think I will wait for the DVD, sorry folks.
The Debt
A historical revenge film seen through flashbacks and voiceovers. While I am all for historical dramas I am not sure this one is worth the effort. I can't relate to the "heroes" or the time period as I wasn't even born yet. It might appeal to the older baby boomer crowd but they are not the usual attendees of movies these days. Regardless I think I will pass on December 29, 2010, hopefully someone other than the critics and academy voters will watch it.
Devil
Horror movies are either becoming more highbrow or so low budget its obvious. This falls somewhere in between. Four people trapped in an elevator and the Devil is among them. What more can be said? Oh yeah its another in a long line of M. Night Shyamalan movies (he was a co-writer and didn't direct it). Not sure in what context that Devil movies fall into anymore but I think on September 17, 2010 I won't be finding out.

Due Date
Planes, Trains and Automobiles for the modern age. A road trip movie that might not be as funny as it appears. I like the actors that are in it but not enough to probably see this one. Due out November 5, 2010 this baby appears to be a possible stillborn.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
The sequel to the wonderfully done 80's movie Wall Street and we see the return of Michael Douglas as the sleazy schister Gordon Gekko. I really enjoyed the first one and I am looking forward to this sequel. Time will tell if this film will stand the test and push Shia LeBouf further into the limelight but I know I will probably see it. It releases September 24, 2010 and hopefully it gets the attendance it deserves.
The American
George Clooney as an American assassin traveling the world eliminating our problems one at a time. At the end of his career he finds himself in Italy for one last job when things do not go according to plan. Might be worth a rental but I don't think its going to be a good draw especially opening September 1, 2010 when most people will be thinking about BBQ's and family events.
The Social Network
A biopic about the origins of Facebook. Need I say more? I don't think so this one is for those who don't already know or for those that just want to see what all the fuss is about. I am neither so I will be staying home on October 1, 2010 and eat popcorn while watching a DVD or something I taped on my DVR.
The Town

Well that's all the previews there sure were a lot of them with quite a few repeats I might add. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot that are not going to be seen in the theater (which is a shame) but a few that could be worth it in the long run. I'm sure you will tell me if I am on the mark or not.
On to the reviews of the films I did see this week.
The Last Airbender
As a long time fan of the show I went into this with quite a high expectation of what it could be about. Unfortunately for me and most of the other fans who have seen it it falls woefully short. Regardless of the obvious, glaring changes (I'm sure there was a logical and sound reason for them) it was somewhat entertaining and if you are neither a fan or have children this may be the film for you. I'm sure from the point of view of the writer/director/producer it was a fine film and hit all the salient points, I found it to be poorly paced, with improper pronunciations and long sequences of bending that made it way too distracting. If your a huge fan avoid this movie and wait for the DVD.

Salt
The sleeper hit of the summer. This movie is so chock-full of twists and turns and action you hardly realize you have been sitting there for almost 2 hours. Angelina Jolie shines in the role of Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent that has been accused of being a Russian spy. The Cold War may be over but this movie brings it to the forefront again. A wild ride that leaves you guessing at every turn. Well worth watching in the theater.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice
As I have already watched this one and reviewed it here I find the fact that I watched it again to be a telling sign. It was as enjoyable the second time around as the first.
Inception
What can I say that has not already been voiced a thousand times over by friends and family that have already seen this wonderful film. If you haven't seen it then you must. Regardless of how you might feel about the actors starring in it it is a must see for the summer. Written and directed by one of the best minds in Hollyweird right now Christopher Nolan (Director of Batman Begins, Dark Knight, The Prestige) this movie has all the right elements of a classic thriller. If there was anyone that could take up the mantle of the late great Alfred Hitchcock it would be Christopher Nolan. See the film and if you have already seen it see it again it is well worth the price of admission.

Previews of Schmucks, Housepets and Grief
Opening nationwide this week are an interesting mix of films.
Dinner for Schmucks
A delightfully bizarre and unfunny comedy from the previews I have seen or maybe I need to reevaluate my taste in films, because it seems that I have some taste after all. This movie is another in a long line of tripe that Hollyweird has been putting out lately and hoping that the stars will draw in the masses. If you like mindless gags and inane comedy then this one might be for you but I think I am going to pass on this one.
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
If you have children this might be a fun film for them but I don't think adults will enjoy it that much. Of course talking animals can be fun but if that's not your bag then you might want to consider waiting for DVD for this one.
Charlie St. Cloud
An intriguing film about dealing with grief over the loss of a loved one and the conflict that ensues. This one looks like a decent film and while I usually shy away from dramas, I might watch this one.

Previews Of Spies and Sisters
Opening this week nationwide is a couple of new films that couldn't be more different.
Salt
A twist on the spy genre that is not without plausability. It seems that spies are back in fashion. Of course Angelina Jolie is no Sean Connery and Salt is no James Bond it does look like an action packed thriller. As a fan of both Mrs. Jolie and Action films, I might go see this one in the theater.
Ramona and Beezus
I am kind of a closet Selena Gomez fan but this film looks a little more bizarre than even for her. Of course I am not a teen girl and these sorts of movies targeting them have no interest to me it does look like a fairly decent story about the life of these eccentric sisters. If you have tween girls or are just into this sort of drama it might be worth a look for you.
I have heard nothing but good things about Inception and the more I hear the more I'm thinking it will be a well worth watching. If you have seen it or are holding out, I have to tell you just based on my friends opinions and the previews it sounds like a really good film even disregarding the lack of what the overall plot is about not being revealed in any print or the previews.

Of Magic and Dreams
This week brings us two very different movies The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Inception. Now being a economic conscience individual I went to the one that was being paid for by someone else. So I ended up watching the Sorcerer's Apprentice. As soon as I watch Inception I will have some insight about it I'm sure but on to the previews.
The following previews were on the front of the movie only after about 5 minutes of commercials and ads for the theater (I don't know about you but I hardly think that this is necessary with the prices they charge).
Tangled
Due out Nov 24th this revision of Rapunzel might but Disney animation studios back in the running for quality films and rely less on pixar to carry them. It looks interesting and I'll probably go see it when it releases.
Nanny McPhee Returns
Due out Aug 20th this children's tale might be enjoyable fun for the whole family as I don't have any young kids it doesn't interest me otherwise.
Secritariat
Due out Oct 1st this biopic of the longshot horse winning the triple crown in 1973 could be the sleeper hit of the summer. I might actually watch this one.
Chronicles of Narnia: The voyage of the Dawn Treader
Due out December 10th I am looking forward to this one almost as much as the previous editions. Hopefully it will live up to the hype.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows
The long awaited finale to the franchise should be one of the best in the series and being a fan I'm sure I will try and enjoy it and will definitely see this one in the theater. Part I is scheduled for a Nov 19th release. Just in time for Thanksgiving! Part II will will have to wait until July 15th, 2011 but worth it overall I think.
All the new releases will be in 3D unfortunately and thankfully they will also be available in 2D which I prefer. I fail to understand the philosophy behind the 3D movement but if Hollyweird wants to push this I guess its their right.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
As the movie started I watched in anticipation of a potential letdown. I was glad to be disappointed in this regard. The story was better than anticipated and the movie was truly and engaging and entertaining film. While it may not be a blockbuster or an Oscar nominated film it has its moments and is good family fun. The PG rating may make some parents shy away and I do admit that some of the special effects while cool to see may scare younger children as well as some of the action scenes. Although the MPAA says there is some brief language I failed to detect any significant use of it but I would caution those parents with little ones to keep these things in mind when considering this movie. I was worried that this movie would fall into the wooden acting category as there seems to be a lot of green screen usage in the film but I was mildly surprised that it didn't seem to have that big of an effect.
Nicholas Cage shined in this film greater than he has in recent films while I like the National Treasure Franchise the Book of Secrets was not as good as the first (most sequels usually aren't but this one should have been better). Hopefully if there is a sequel to Apprentice it will be bigger and better than the first. As an actor some people see him as a hit or miss kind of guy but I personally think he is underrated for his talent. He definitely has the chops and they show in this film.
Alfred Molina, what can I say that hasn't already been said, he is a talented and charismatic actor and plays the bad guy role very well (if you need even more proof just watch Spider-Man 2). Hopefully they recast him in the sequel if there is one.
Overall a very entertaining movie and I would definitely watch it again.
Entertainment: 4
Family-Friendly: 3
Special Effects: 4
Plot: 4
Overall: 4
As of this writing the movie was in 3rd place. I'm sure the 1st and 2nd place movies are worth the watching as well and when I have the time and money I may see them also.

And so it begins...
I'll be the first to admit that this is a strange and interesting turn of events for me. I have always enjoyed movies and own quite a large amount of them in various formats but to actively write about what I enjoy so much has eluded me for quite some time. I always thought that the critics were there to guide us in our choices at the movies and recently they have let me down. Critics (it seems) are there to guide you to the movies that will garner them the most acclaim or even just to pump up a movies attendance for whatever reason they so choose but being a long time fan of movies (including those old black and whites as well as some silent films). I feel that people of all walks of life and experiences for one reason or another hate critics views about the movies they love.
The reason I started this blog is for the average viewer of movies. Its merely a tool for me to express my opinion about movies and to show you the moviegoer what movies have been released and in my humble opinion whats worth paying your hard earned money for and what is not. At the end of every review I will have a scale of 1-5 on various things I find important to me when I go and see a movie. A rating of 1 is the worst kind of rating it indicates if the movie falls short and a rating of 5 means the movie is the best in that category.
Of course as I stated earlier these are only my opinions and you can take or leave them as you like. I welcome all comments and opinions as I am not always right and if you feel that a movie should be rated higher or lower then welcome your comments.
Thanks for reading and I hope that my opinions are worth your time and patience.
